Organization Description

Project Seahorse is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of seahorses and the protection of marine ecosystems. Founded in 1996, the organization is a global leader in seahorse research, advocacy, and conservation efforts. Project Seahorse works to ensure the survival of seahorses, which face numerous threats from habitat loss, overfishing, and the illegal wildlife trade.

The organization’s work spans over 30 countries, focusing on the science of seahorse biology, behavior, and ecology to inform conservation strategies. Project Seahorse advocates for the sustainable management of marine environments, working closely with governments, local communities, and the fishing industry to implement policies that protect seahorse populations and their habitats.

One of their key initiatives is the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) and sustainable fisheries management practices to reduce the environmental impact of fishing on seahorse populations. Additionally, they are involved in promoting the inclusion of seahorses in international conservation agreements, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), to curb illegal trade.

Project Seahorse also focuses on raising public awareness about the plight of seahorses through education and outreach programs. Their ultimate goal is to preserve the biodiversity of marine ecosystems while ensuring the long-term survival of seahorses and other marine species.
